Introduction - YJ's Profile

안녕하세요, 오늘부터 여러분들께 한국어를 가르쳐드릴 YJ입니다. 자, 오늘은 첫 시간인 만큼 강의를 시작하기 전에 간단히 제 소개부터 할게요. 저는 한국인이고, 한국에서 한국어-스페인어 통번역사로 활동하고 있어요.

Hello, this is YJ, and I’m here to teach you Korean from today. As this is our first session, let me start with a brief introduction. Of course I’m a Korean, working as a Korean-Spanish interpreter in Korea. 

 

 

그리고 한국인들에게 온라인과 오프라인으로 스페인어를 가르치고 있습니다. 여러분들께 한국어를 가르쳐드리고 싶어서 작년에 한국어교원자격시험을 봐서 합격했구요, 오늘부터 이렇게 유튜브를 통해서 강의를 시작하게 됐어요.

And I teach Spanish to Koreans both online and offline. Hoping to teach you Korean, I passed the Korean Language Teacher Qualification Test last year, and now I am starting these lectures on YouTube.

 

 

 

저도 여러분들처럼 외국어 공부하는 것을 정말 좋아해요. 그래서 지금까지 영어, 중국어, 스페인어, 일본어를 열심히 공부했고, 작년에는 회화시험에서도 좋은 성적을 받았어요. 이렇게 저는 여러분들의 한국어 선생님이기도 하지만, 여러분들처럼 외국어를 열심히 공부하고 있는 학생이기도 합니다.

Just like you, I also love studying foreign languages. So, until now, I have diligently studied English, Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese, and last year, I achieved pretty good scores in oral tests. So, I am your Korean teacher but also a student studying foreign languages diligently at the same time. 

 

 

그래서 그 누구보다 여러분들의 마음을 잘 이해하고 있고, 외국어를 공부하는 방법도 잘 알고 있어요. 그리고 처음 한국어를 시작하는 여러분들의 마음을 더 잘 이해하려고 올해부터는 베트남어 공부도 시작했어요. 앞으로 한국어 외에도 외국어를 공부하는 방법에 대해서도 많이 알려드릴게요.

So, I understand what you feel better than anyone and know pretty well the methods of studying a foreign language. And to better understand the beginner's mind in learning Korean, I have started studying Vietnamese this year too. So, during the lecture, I will also provide you with a lot of information on how to study foreign languages effectively besides Korean.

Introduction - Korean Class

 

 

 

자, 여기까지 저에 대해서 간단히 말씀드렸고, 지금부터는 강의에 대해서 말씀드릴게요. 우선 많은 분들께 한국어를 가르쳐드리고 싶어서 한국어, 영어, 스페인어 이렇게 3개의 언어로 강의 영상을 만들어 올릴 생각이에요. 아직 제 영어와 스페인어 실력이 많이 부족하지만 그래도 한국어에 대한 제 설명은 충분히 전달할 수 있을 거라고 생각해요.

Well, I’ve briefly introduced myself, and now let's talk about the lectures. I want to teach Korean to many people, so I plan to upload videos in three different languages: Korean, English, and Spanish. Although my English and Spanish are not perfect, I believe at least I can convey my explanations on Korean. 

 

 

저의 강점은 다양한 외국어를 이해하고 있다는 점이고, 실제로 강의에 이런 점들을 반영해서 설명할 생각이에요. 물론 제 모국어는 한국어이고, 저는 사투리를 전혀 쓰지 않는 100% 표준어 사용자입니다.

My strength lies in understanding various languages, and I also plan to incorporate this into my lectures. Of course my mother tongue is Korean, and I use standard Korean without any dialect.

 

 

 

앞으로 영어 영상은 썸네일 테두리를 노란색, 스페인어는 연두색, 한국어는 핑크색으로 만들어서 올릴 거에요. 영어와 스페인어 영상에서는 보통 속도로 설명할 예정이고, 한국어 영상에서는 천천히 말할 건데요, 오늘은 설명이 많으니까 오늘만 조금 빠르게 말하고 자막을 추가할게요.

From now on, English videos will have a yellow border on the thumbnail, Spanish, a light green, and Korean, pink. In English and Spanish videos, I'll speak at a normal pace, and in Korean videos, let me speak slowly, but only in the first video a bit faster but with subtitles due to the lengthy explanation. 

 

 

앞으로는 영어나 스페인어 영상을 먼저 보고 내용을 이해하고 나서 한국어 영상을 복습용으로 보시는 것을 추천드려요. 특히 한국어 영상은 이미 본 영상이더라도 여러 번 반복해서 보시는 것을 추천드려요. 외국어 공부를 할 때는 반복하는 게 정말 정말 중요하거든요.

I recommend watching the English or Spanish videos first to understand the content in detail, then use the Korean videos for your revision. Especially for Korean videos, I suggest watching them repeatedly, as repetition is very, very important in language learning.

 

 

그리고 저는 현실적이고 프랙티컬한 내용들 위주로 강의할 생각이에요. 언어를 배우다 보면 특별히 이유가 없거나 문법적으로 예외인 경우들도 많아서 일일이 이해하는 것보다 그냥 받아들이고 단순히 암기를 하는 편이 쉬운 경우도 정말 많은데, 한국어도 마찬가지예요.

Well, my lectures will focus on practical content. When learning a language, there are often cases that are special without any particular reason or are grammatically exceptional. So, many times it's easier to just accept and memorize them rather than trying to understand each one in detail, and this is also true for Korean. 

 

 

저는 이렇게 실제로 한국인들도 잘 모르거나 외국인으로서 암기를 하는 편이 훨씬 효율적인 부분은 일일이 어렵게 설명하기 보다는 암기를 하시라고 따로 구분해서 말씀드리겠습니다.

So, let me specifically point out the parts that even Koreans don't know well or that are much more efficient for foreigners to memorize, rather than trying to explain them in detail.

Chapter #1 - Korean vs Hangul

 

 

 

자, 첫 시간이라서 설명이 길었는데, 이제 본격적으로 강의를 시작해 볼까요? 여러분, 한국어와 한글의 차이점을 알고 계신가요? 간단히 말해서 한국어는 한국인들이 모국어로 사용하는 언어이고, 한글은 한국어를 표기하기 위한 문자예요. 쉽게 말해서 한글은 한국어의 알파벳이라고 할 수 있어요.

Alright, as this is our first session, the explanation was pretty long. Now, let's start the actual lecture. Well, do you know the difference between Korean and Hangul? Korean is the language spoken by Koreans as their mother tongue, and Hangul is the alphabet used to write Korean.

 

 

 

그리고 영어와 스페인어가 알파벳을 알면 뜻을 몰라도 발음을 할 수 있는 것처럼 한국어도 한글을 알면 뜻을 몰라도 발음을 할 수 있어요. 이런 부분은 중국어나 일본어보다 쉽다고 할 수 있어요. 그리고 한글은 자음과 모음으로 이루어져 있고 외국인도 어렵지 않게 배울 수 있어요.

And just like English and Spanish, where you can pronounce words if you know the alphabet, you can also pronounce Korean words by knowing Hangul. This aspect is easier compared to Chinese or Japanese. And Hangul consists of consonants and vowels and is easy for foreigners to learn too.

Chapter #2 - Grammatical Structure ▶ S + O + V

다음으로, 한국어의 특징을 몇가지 말씀드릴게요. 한국어는 주어+동사+목적어 구조인 영어나 스페인어와는 다르게 기본적으로 주어+목적어+동사 순서로 구성돼요. 그런데 실제로 사용할 때는 비교적 자유롭게 순서를 바꿔서 사용하기도 해요. 두번째 특징은 영어나 스페인어에서는 주어가 복수일 때 동사의 형태가 바뀌고, 또 스페인어에서는 성별에 따라서 단어의 형태가 달라지는 것과는 다르게 따로 구별하지 않고 사용한다는 점이에요. 이 부분은 더 쉽죠?

Now, let me talk about some characteristics of Korean. Korean typically follows a Subject – Object - Verb order, unlike English or Spanish, which are Subject – Verb - Object. However, in practice, this order can be quite flexible. Another feature is that unlike English and Spanish, where the verb form changes with plural subjects, and in Spanish, where the word form changes with gender, Korean does not make these distinctions.

Chapter #3 - Honorifics and Informal Speech

 

 

 

다음은 한국어가 외국인에게 어려울 수 있는 점들에 대해서 말씀드릴게요. 첫번째는 높임법과 반말이 있다는 점인데요, 이것 때문에 외국인들이 한국어를 많이 어려워하는 것 같아요. 실제로 어려운 것이 사실이구요. 높임법과 반말은 한국에서 직접 생활해보지 않으면 정확하게 사용하기 어렵기 때문에 한국인들은 높임법과 반말을 얼마나 자연스럽게 쓰는지 보면 외국인들의 한국어 실력을 쉽게 알 수 있어요.

Now, let's talk about the difficulties foreigners might face with Korean. First, the use of honorifics and informal speech can be challenging. It’s indeed difficult, and unless you live in Korea, it's hard to use them correctly. So, Koreans can judge one's Korean proficiency by how naturally they use honorifics and informal speech. 

 

 

높임법과 반말은 한국어를 자주 듣고 공부하다 보면 익숙해지기 시작하니까 지금부터 공부하지 않으셔도 괜찮아요. 높임법과 반말은 어렵기는 하지만 한국어의 독특한 특징이라고 생각해주세요.

Well, you'll start to get familiar with honorifics and informal language as you frequently listen to and study Korean, so it's okay not to start learning them right now. Although challenging, please consider these as unique features of Korean.

Chapter #4 - Spacing

 

 

두번째로 어려운 점은 바로 띄어쓰기예요. 단어마다 띄어쓰기를 하면 되는 영어나 스페인어와는 다르게 한국어는 규칙이 더 복잡하고 한국인들도 띄어쓰기를 틀리는 경우가 많아요. 한국인들도 틀리는 경우가 많으니까 어렵다고 너무 걱정하지는 마세요. 실제로 한국어는 띄어쓰기를 조금 틀려도 이해할 수 있는 언어입니다.  

Second, spacing in Korean can be difficult. Unlike English and Spanish, where you just space between words, Korean spacing rules are more complex, and even Koreans often make mistakes. So don’t worry too much about spacing from the start. Korean is understandable even with some spacing errors.

Chapter #5 - Dialect

세번째로, 한국이 지리적으로 작은 국가이기는 하지만 지역에 따라서 방언을 사용해요. 하지만 모두 똑같이 한글을 사용하고 대부분 비슷한 단어를 사용하기 때문에 크게 걱정하지는 않으셔도 돼요. 사투리는 한국 드라마나 영화를 자주 보다 보면 차츰 익숙해질 거에요.

A great thing about Korean is that you can enjoy various content on YouTube and Netflix. The most important aspect of learning a language is 'fun,' so please enjoy various Korean contents while studying, then you can improve your skill much faster.

 

 

한국어의 장점은 유튜브나 넷플릭스를 통해서 정말 다양한 콘텐츠를 즐길 수 있다는 점이에요. 외국어를 배우는데 있어서 가장 중요한 점이 ‘재미’이기 때문에 공부를 하면서 다양한 한국어 콘텐츠도 함께 즐기시면 한국어 실력이 훨씬 빨리 좋아질 거예요.

Third, Korea, despite being geographically small, has regional dialects. But don't worry too much, as everyone uses the same Hangul and mostly similar words. You will get used to dialects by watching Korean dramas and movies.

Chapter #6 - Korean in Speaking, Writing and Internet & SNS

 

 

 

자, 마지막으로, 한국어는 실제로 말을 할 때와 글로 쓸 때, 그리고 인터넷이나 SNS로 글을 쓸 때 사용하는 언어가 조금 다른 경향이 있어요. 모두 한글을 사용하는 똑같은 한국어이지만 스타일이 조금 다르다고 할 수 있을 것 같아요. 이런 점들이 외국인들이 자연스러운 한국어를 구사하는 데 조금 어려울 수 있는 부분인 것 같아요. 그래서 제 생각에 한국어는 외국인으로서 한국인처럼 잘하기에는 정말 어려운 언어인 것 같아요.

Finally, Korean used in speaking, writing, and on the internet or social media can differ. While all these are in same Hangul, the styles vary. This might make it a bit difficult for foreigners to use natural Korean. In this regard, I would say Korean is a tough language for foreigners to master perfectly.

Well, like how Japanese and Chinese are relatively easier for me, and English and Spanish are harder, Korean might be very unfamiliar and difficult for those whose native languages are English and Spanish. But, please don't be stressed-out too much; it's natural to find it more challenging than languages of neighboring countries. I will kindly and efficiently teach you Korean step by step.
