Learn KOREAN by Topic┃#8 한국생활의 특징

After listening to Antonio's explanation about the characteristics of Koreans, I realized that they are very different from Mexicans. Antonio asked if there were any other questions, so I asked about the characteristics of life in Korea that he had learned while studying here. Antonio then proceeded to explain some key aspects of life in Korea that one should be aware of.

First and foremost, Korea experiences four distinct seasons. There is a warm spring from March to May, a hot summer from June to August, a cool autumn from September to November, and a cold winter from December to February.

During summer, temperatures can reach up to 35 degrees Celsius, while in winter, it can drop to as low as minus 15 degrees Celsius. This is why they emphasize the need for a variety of clothing when living in Korea for an extended period of time.

Most Koreans work from 9 am to 6 pm, and during rush hour, the subway and buses are crowded with commuters. Unlike Japan, in Korea, people walk or drive on the right side, and the steering wheel of a car is located on the left. Additionally, escalators are used in a specific manner: the right side is reserved for those standing, while the left side is for those who wish to walk.

Korea has an extensive waste separation system. It is known as one of the countries that prioritize waste separation. Waste is typically categorized into general waste, food waste, paper, glass, cans, and plastic. It is important to note that waste should not be placed in just any plastic bag and thrown away.

Korea is considered a safe country with a high number of CCTV cameras installed. As a result, it is generally safe to use your cell phone in public transportation or on the streets. Even Koreans sometimes leave their clothes or bags unattended when using the restroom in a cafe. They typically don't worry about theft as there is a strong fear of legal repercussions for such actions.

In Korean cafes, they provide customers with a vibrating bell after ordering and paying. When the coffee is ready, the bell notifies the customer, who can then return the bell and collect their coffee. This system ensures efficient service and convenience.

Due to its relatively small land size and a high population density in cities, Korea has many tall buildings, and people predominantly live in apartments or officetels. With the increasing trend of living alone, it is common for individuals to go to restaurants, movie theaters, or karaoke alone without feeling unusual. The availability of nearby gyms and PC rooms with excellent facilities also caters to the needs of sports enthusiasts or gamers.

While most Koreans may not speak English fluently, younger generations and service providers can engage in basic conversations. This makes it relatively convenient when using shops, restaurants, or traveling. However, complex questions or interviews may pose difficulties in communication.

Antonio's explanations have been invaluable. Having enjoyed delicious food and gained knowledge from my friend since my first day in Korea, I am now finished with my meal and drinks and ready to take the subway home. I feel content and grateful for the experiences. After a good rest tonight, I will start preparing for my upcoming classes and dedicate myself to studying Korean diligently from tomorrow onwards.
